Oakland, CA - Fentons Creamery, a historic and family-owned ice cream institution since 1894, invites the community to celebrate its 131st anniversary on Sunday, July 20, 2025, in conjunction with National Ice Cream Day. The celebration will be held at both Fentons locations in Oakland and Vacaville and will honor this year's theme: "Tradition for Generations."
Fentons Creamery holds a special place in American dessert history as the original birthplace of Rocky Road ice cream and the world-famous Black and Tan Sundae. As the second oldest continuously operating ice cream parlor in the United States, Fentons has served as a cornerstone of the Bay Area community for over a century, welcoming generations of loyal customers.

"As we mark 131 years of serving the community, we are honored to be part of so many family stories," said Scott Whidden, owner of Fentons Creamery. "We are proud of our history and committed to keeping this tradition alive for another 100 years. This celebration is our way of thanking everyone who has made Fentons a beloved landmark."
From 11 AM to 2 PM on July 20, customers can enjoy a range of complimentary outdoor festivities, including a signature flavor scooping station featuring Rocky Road, Toasted Almond, and Swiss Milk Chocolate. These classic flavors were developed by Melvin Fenton, grandson of founder E.S. Fenton. Melvin introduced ice cream to the family dairy in 1922 and is widely regarded as Fentons' original ice cream masterblender. Additional activities will include crafts for kids, appearances by Myrtle the Cow, live music from a patio DJ, and prize raffles every 30 minutes. Limited edition "Tradition for Generations" T-shirts in adult and youth sizes will be available while supplies last.
The featured deal of the day is a $1.31 Black & Tan Junior Sundae, available all day for dine-in or take-out, one per customer. This price rollback celebrates Fentons' 131 years in business and remains a favorite among long-time patrons.

In addition to the anniversary festivities, Fentons will offer a special $18.94 menu item throughout the month of July. This combo includes a half Crab Salad Sandwich, one fountain beverage, and a choice of one side. Guests may also add a taster-size milkshake for $5.00. This limited-time offering is available for dine-in or take-out with no substitutions or discounts.
Fentons has also introduced a new sundae this month to honor Melvin Fenton's contributions. The "Ode to Melvin" features two of his original flavor creations, Toasted Almond and Swiss Milk Chocolate. A Signature Flavor Trio, available as a flight or served in a classic boat, will also include these two flavors along with Rocky Road.
